WATCH: New Jersey’s most controversial hot dog is back
Served at 1950 Originals each January, this limited-edition “Ramen Dog” has divided the internet since it hit Instagram last winter.
You know it, you love it, you hate it. You love to hate it (or, perhaps, you hate that you know you love it).
Any guesses, North Jersey?
The Nissan Cube? Honey on pizza? “90 Day Fiancé?”
Right, but situationally wrong — because I’m talking about the infamous Ramen Dog, the state’s most controversial frankfurter.
Served at 1950 Originals, a contemporary fast food joint known for its unique hot dogs and fries, the noodle-topped cult-favorite is back for the month of January, because, as its creator Danny Fabian says, “it’s so good it’ll make you break your New Year’s Resolution.”
That might seem like a large claim for a piece of meat on a bun, but, then again, two-thirds of you are going to stop going to Planet Fitness by January 11.
So, it just might true (shrug emoji).
A ramen-topped hot dog arrives in North Jersey
The Ramen Dog, formally known as the “Ramen Resolution Dog,” is a limited edition special served at 1950 Originals in Westwood and Westfield each January.
Smothered in stir-fired noodles, house-made miso cheese sauce, furikake seasoning, scallions and a soy-marinated egg, the drippy handheld has polarized humans of the internet since it hit social media last winter.
“Disgusting,” one Instagram user commented on a video reel of the frank.
“I’m sorry,” another added, “but UUGGHH.”
On the flip side, however, plenty of users supported the fusion dish.
“That’s great,” one man said.
“It definitely works!” agreed the Westwood-based St. Thomas Knights of Columbus.
Noodles and frankfurters: not so rare
Now, let’s get one thing clear: The combination of noodles and hot dogs is not unheard of.
Filipinos have been throwing chopped frankfurters into their pasta for years, with the country’s largest fast food chain Jollibee making bank on its “Jolly Spaghetti” (a sweet and savory side dish featuring ground beef, melted cheese and, of course, hot dog).
At Manhattan’s Jongro Rice Hot Dog, you can order a corn dog coated in a shell of deep-fried ramen, while, in Hong Kong, Reddit users have seen frankfurters used as a protein topping in noodle soup.
And, though I can’t say with 100% certainty, I’m pretty positive some college kid somewhere makes the amalgamation on a daily basis.
1950 Originals, however, is mixing the pair the loudest, simultaneously satisfying palates that crave a good sodium bomb while pissing off purists who think spicy mustard, raw onions and bean-less chili are the only way to decorate a dog.
As for what team I’m on?
Pass the salt.
1950 Originals is located at 325 Broadway in Westwood and 13 Elm Street in Westfield. For more information on the restaurant, visit 1950originals.com.
