DEAR PET TALK READERS: We are beginning the year with the most common questions about taking care of dogs. Thank you for all your questions last year and we welcome more!
How do I get my dog used to walking on a leash?
First, get a nylon leash. Those ghastly retractable leashes are dangerous for you and your dog. Clip the leash on your dog while you are inside. If she is not chewing on the leash, and has your attention, say “Let’s go,” and walk outside.
When you walk your dog outside, there will be a lot of competition for her attention (squirrels, interesting smells, other dogs). Keep close eye contact with her throughout this process. Anytime she looks at you, say “good dog” or give a treat. You may have to have a lot of treats on hand, and patience for this phase of training. Remember, you and your dog are a team. Her job is keeping the leash loose, and your job is teaching her that’s how you walk together.
Why does my dog need a rabies shot?
Rabies exists in every state, usually in wild animals, and rabies vaccinations are required by law, to keep your dog safe — and humans. The rabies shot is inexpensive, and required for all dogs, who must be licensed in their city or town.
Is it okay for my dog to be on the couch?
That is a question for you and your family to decide. If you have an upholstered couch, consider adding an appropriately sized dog bed or blankets for your dog to “nest” in. Frankly, watching the news, with your dog by your side, will be less stressful for you both.
What is the biggest dog?
According to the American Kennel Club, great danes are the largest and can top out at 175 pounds and 32 inches at the shoulder (male). They’re followed by mastiffs, Irish wolfhounds, leonbergers, great Pyrenees, cane corsos and one of our favorites, the Bernese mountain dog. Big dogs are big fun, but require big training for them to be at their best. They also stay big puppies — emotionally and physically — longer than medium-sized dogs.
