BATAVIA, Ohio (WKRC) โ As a winter storm approaches, the League for Animal Welfare is urgently seeking foster homes for 32 dogs to ensure their comfort and safety. The shelter hopes to place the dogs in temporary homes before the storm hits.
On Sunday, 25 dogs will participate in the shelter’s monthly dog walk at Alt Park. The shelter is encouraging those who have signed up for the walk to consider fostering a dog. Any dogs not fostered during the event will be available for fostering at the shelter’s facility from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Dawn Oberschlake, the dog care coordinator at the League for Animal Welfare, emphasized the benefits of fostering.
“It gives them a rest where they can actually rest and sleep because itโs hard to rest in a kennel where itโs so noisy,” she said. “We also learn so much about them. We can do a million evaluations on a dog, but what we donโt know is how they are in that home, and a lot of times that foster is the dog’s biggest advocate.”
Despite the storm expected to begin around noon, Oberschlake remains optimistic about turnout.
“Not really,” she said when asked if she was worried. “There’s a lot of people out there that want to help the dogs so we’re hoping that people will show up early to get here earlier the better. And also if you’re a family that already has dogs and cats in your home, the ones that are dog friendly, cat friendly of course are going to go first. But it’s always an opportunity.”
Fostered dogs should be returned by Tuesday or Wednesday, but those interested in fostering longer can discuss options with shelter staff. If you are interested in learning more about the available dogs at the shelter, click here.
