Grass Roots Rescue takes in 59 dogs from Georgia
Renee’s Rescues and Humane Animal Partners also took in a number of dogs from the neglect case on Sept. 14, 2024.
With Brandywine Valley SPCA’s Mega Adoption event quickly approaching it might be a good time to remind Delawareans of the state canine — the rescue dog.
Yes the “rescue dog” has been the official Delaware state dog since Gov. John Carney signed Senate Bill 37 into law in May 2023. The bill was introduced early last year by state Sen. Jack Walsh and was approved with a wide majority by the state’s House and Senate.
While it’s not known if the legislation, which was expected to help save rescue animals, has done just that, a Brandywine Valley SPCA spokesperson said the law has put a focus not only on dogs but all animals in need of rescue.
“That just elevates all animals in shelters,” said Sara Smith, a Brandywine Valley SPCA spokesperson.
Hundreds of pets in the four-state area will be looking for homes for the holidays as part of Brandywine Valley SPCA’s (BVSPCA) December Mega Adoption Event, which will take place at all BVSPCA locations and other regional participating shelters throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland.
The Mega Adoption Event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 14 and 15. Dogs, cats, puppies and kittens at all participating shelters will be available for adoption for a $35 throughout the event.
Before designating rescue dogs as the official state dog of Delaware, it used to be a golden retriever.
Nearly 20 states have an official state dog. Unlike Delaware, most of those are specific dog breeds.
But the First State is not alone in having a state dog that can be just about any breed. Others states whose state dogs are not breed-specific are Georgia, New Jersey and New York.
