When it comes to dog-friendly destinations in Southern California, Dana Point delivers the perfect mix of coastal charm and outdoor adventure. Known for its stunning harbor, beautiful beaches, world-class surfing, and laid-back vibe, this town isn’t just a paradise for people — it’s a haven for pups, too. Surf enthusiasts will find excellent beginner breaks at Doheny State Beach while experts head to Salt Creek.
Recently, I packed up my bags and brought my Chiweenie, Poppy, along for a two-day Dana Point getaway that was equal parts relaxing and adventurous. From luxurious accommodations to dog-friendly dining and activities, here’s how to spend 48 hours in Dana Point with your four-legged friend.
Where to stay in Dana Point: Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa

Situated on a dramatic bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa recently completed a multi-million-dollar renovation. The 378-room resort offers luxurious contemporary amenities and California coastal design and is the perfect home base for a dog-friendly stay in Dana Point. From the moment Poppy and I arrived, the staff’s warmth and attention to detail made us feel right at home.
The resort offers comfortable accommodations for you and your pup. Poppy especially loved lounging on the private balcony, sniffing the ocean breeze, while I sipped my morning coffee. The property also boasts lush green spaces perfect for a quick walk or a game of fetch before heading out for the day. The location, while not directly on the beach, is within walking distance of dog-friendly beaches and the Dana Point Harbor.
I also enjoyed getting pampered at the resort’s spa. On my visit, I tried one of their new body treatments, the 60-minute SoCal Slimdown, which incorporates KPS Essentials skincare products. This detoxifying and slimming treatment targets stubborn cellulite areas, provides a smooth appearance, and aids in hydration. I was initially skeptical, but afterward, my thighs looked pretty good. To maintain results, however, you must continue the treatments, which I did not do.
Day 1: Coastal adventures and sunset dining

Morning: Breakfast at What a Dish Café
Start your day with a delicious breakfast at What a Dish Café, where the dog-friendly patio is as inviting as the massive menu. The restaurant serves organic, sustainable fare that is healthy yet delicious. Best of all, dogs can order from the “furry friends’ menu.” Poppy tried the pupcakes (grain-free peanut butter and apple cupcakes with peanut butter mouse topped with bacon).
Midday: Kayaking with Westwind Sailing
After breakfast, we headed to Westwind Sailing for a kayaking session. They offer dog-friendly rentals and even provide life jackets for your pup! Poppy, an avid adventurer (don’t ever say a Chiweenie is not brave), perched at the front of the kayak as I paddled us through the calm waters of Dana Point Harbor. It was such a fun way to explore the area with a dog.
Lunch: Harpoon Henry’s
For lunch, Harpoon Henry’s Seafood Restaurant is a must-visit. In operation for more than 44 years, its outdoor patio welcomes dogs, and the views of the marina are as good as its seafood offerings. I had grilled fish tacos and a tasty margarita while Poppy relaxed under the table with a fresh bowl of water from the attentive staff.

Afternoon: The Doggie Barkery
Post-lunch, we popped over to The Doggie Barkery, also in the Dana Point Harbor area. This charming shop sells homemade, gourmet treats, toys, and pet accessories. Poppy was spoiled with a custom-made dog cake, and I couldn’t resist picking up a cute new leash for her.
Evening: Dinner at Truly Pizza
For a laid-back dinner, Truly Pizza is a fantastic option. The local favorite, in the heart of Dana Point, was packed when we visited. Opened in June 2023, Truly Pizza serves delicious wood-fired pizza created with California-focused ingredients. The restaurant is best known for the square pizzas, which are crafted in limited quantities daily, so get there early to ensure they haven’t run out of the dough, which is feather-light and flavorful. The outdoor seating area is dog-friendly. Poppy enjoyed the lively atmosphere and occasional head pats from friendly fellow diners.
Day 2: Trails, yoga, and more dining

Morning: Yoga at Lantern Bay Park
We started day two with outdoor yoga at Lantern Bay Park with iheartyoga, a dog-friendly class venue next to the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa. Poppy was just one of several pups participating in the class. While I stretched and found my Zen, Poppy happily soaked up the morning sun.
Lunch: Craft House
For a change of pace, we headed to Craft House for lunch. The vibrant gastropub focuses on local sourcing and sustainable seafood and has an inventive menu and a dog-friendly patio. The spicy tuna crispy rice starter is a must-order. I also loved the craft house smash burger. I don’t eat much meat, but I was craving beef that day, and this burger hit the spot.

Afternoon: Bluff Top Trail Walk
Next, we hit the Dana Point Bluff Top Trail, a short but scenic walk offering panoramic coastline views. Poppy loved exploring the trail, her tail wagging nonstop as we passed wildflowers and caught glimpses of the sparkling Pacific below.
Evening: Dinner at Lantern’s Edge
We wrapped up our trip with a sunset dinner at Lantern’s Edge, located at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa. The cozy outdoor patio with heat lamps and fire pits was the perfect place to end our trip. The restaurant also has a proper dog menu, and Poppy started with beef tenderloin tips over rice and then had frozen yogurt bites for dessert. For humans, I loved the oysters to start and then moved on to seafood pasta.
