NEWBERRY, Mich. (WLUC) – A sled dog race is returning to the Newberry area after a two-year absence due to poor snow conditions.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog race.
There are four different classes of races, including professional, recreational and a junior class.
Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race Board Member Laura Bontrager said racers are eager to get on the trails.
“We’re excited that it’s cooperating here,” Bontrager said. “I know mushers are excited to come and get on the trail with sleds, maybe for the first time for a few of them, because they don’t have snow at home.”
Bontrager says there are a full 45 teams, the maximum number for the race, signed up.
She says these teams will start at a new location this year.
“Right now, we have 45 teams signed up for this race,” Bontrager said. “We’re at an alternate starting location this year due to snow conditions. We have a fabulous trail. It’s got lots of snow on it, but we are starting at Headquarters Lake State Forest Campground.”
Racers and spectators aren’t the only ones excited about the return of the race.
Pine Stump Junction, which offers a bar, restaurant and rental cabins, is closely located to the race’s start.
The owner of Pine Stump Junction says the race helps bring in business.
“Typically, it’s a little slower this weekend, so the race helps bring in mushers, teams and spectators,” Pine Stump Rob said.
The races will begin Saturday and run through Sunday.
Bontrager thanks all sponsors, volunteers and mushers.
