Looking for the perfect companion to bring home to the cosy rural hut he shares with partner, Coinneach MacLeod (The Hebridean Baker), episode four saw MacQueen fall for another Westie puppy.
Those who follow the pair on Instagram can attest that Flòraidh has settled in nicely, but fans hadn’t anticipated that that there was another four-legged surprise in store.
Reflecting on the potential commitment of another pup, MacQueen said: “Flòraidh is now five months old and getting used to our lifestyle, but I’d like to find her a pal. I’ve been thinking about our way of life, all the coming and going, and travelling for work. Any dog coming into this world would have to get along with her and be able to cope with our lifestyle.”

While allowing viewers the chance to get to know a range of adorable pups, the series highlights the importance of choosing the right breed – encouraging potential dog-owners to think more carefully about the responsibilities of bringing a dog into the family.
After meeting Terriers, Deerhounds, Westies and Labradors, all with qualities that won him over, MacQueen heads to a local dog show to revisit some of the remarkable Scottish breeds he’d encountered throughout the series, before returning to the hut in Oban to make his decision.
In the final episode, which aired on Christmas Day, we meet Flòraidh’s new pal: Peigi, a Dandie Dinmont Terrier – one of Scotland’s most rare breeds, classed as a vulnerable native breed due to their decreasing numbers.
MacQueen said: “I knew championing this dwindling Scottish breed and helping to raise their profile was something I could do. When I started this journey, I never imagined we’d end up with two dogs. I love the fact we now have two Scottish Terriers. I hope this will draw attention to these dogs and how great they are, and I hope they’ll have a long and happy life together.”
During the episode, MacQueen also learns about the rewarding experience of rescuing a dog. He visits friends with rescue and mixed-breed dogs and takes a trip to the SSPCA Highlands and Islands animal rescue and rehoming centre, before travelling to Fife to meet top scent-detection dogs, all of whom began as rescues.
MacQueen added: “Each year, the SSPCA rescues, supports and rehomes thousands of animals. It’s heartbreaking that they need a place like this – but thank goodness there is a place like this.
“Rescue dogs come in all shapes, sizes and personalities. Whether you’re seeking an active adventure buddy or a couch potato, there’s a rescue dog for you. They may need a little extra patience and understanding, but with time and love – and plenty of treats, the experience is deeply rewarding. Could you give a deserving dog a second chance at happiness?”
