MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WKRC) – A family was mourning a tragic death on Christmas Eve after Robert “Bobby” Cavanaugh was fatally injured while trying to save a dog, leading to his death.
Bobby was riding his bike when he witnessed a neighbor beating a dog. As he intervened, he was allegedly attacked with an object, sustaining injuries that led to his death at a local hospital, according to FOX 2.
“Found Mr. Cavanaugh unresponsive and bleeding,” said David Koehler, Madison Heights Police Lt., to FOX 2. “The fire department tried life-saving measures, transported him to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”
Police were investigating the incident and looking into reports that Bobby was trying to save the dog.
“There was an altercation of some sort, but we don’t know what led to it,” said Koehler to FOX 2. “Our investigation has led to the arrest of someone, but it appeared Cavanaugh had some blunt force trauma which could have potentially caused his death.”
The suspect was known to law enforcement, police said.
Bobby’s sister, Jane Thompson, expressed her admiration for her brother.
“He’s kind of a hero to me,” she said. “He was always reaching out to others, helping them.”
Neighbors in the mobile home community where Bobby lived said he was an animal lover.
“He would not let anybody kill an animal or hurt one,” said Rebecca Spencer, a neighbor. “He has been in this community for so long, and he has helped everybody,”
Bobby’s family was seeking assistance from the community to help with funeral expenses. Donations could be made through their gofundme page.
