Man fostering partially blind dog he rescued from Phoenix freeway

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A little gray dog who was running loose on the Interstate 17 near Camelback over the weekend, is now in a new home.

The dog is surrounded by love as she naps in her new bed in Marshall Torres and his girlfriend Tricia DelCore’s home.

“Went from 99% sure you were getting squished to having a good home,” said DelCore.

The pup is getting all the rest she can after going through a stressful ordeal.

“She’s very, very fortunate,” said Torres.

ADOT’s camera captured the dog running frantically on the highway Sunday morning.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said it shut down the northbound lanes for a couple of minutes while a trooper and a man tried catching the dog.

Moments later, Torres said he jumped in to help.

“All in all, it was just a spur of the moment thing. I saw everybody doing their part, so I did my part,” said Torres.

He said the dog’s leg got stuck in a drainage for a moment but kept running.

When he managed to grab her, he said she bit him a few times but didn’t hurt him.

“It got a second chance for a reason. It’s here for a reason,” said Torres.

His children named the dog Luna. He said she had a collar but no tag and no chip.

Torres explained Luna is an older dog with a blind eye. He noticed she was malnourished, matted and dirty.

“Animals are really, they love us unconditionally. They deserve to be loved and treated good,” said DelCore.

They said Luna is a good girl who is potty trained and gets along with their other dog.

If no one claims her or steps up to adopt her, they plan on being her forever home.

“We want her to have the best home and the best care that she can have,” said DelCore.

Luna is scheduled to visit the veterinarian next week to receive her shots and get chipped. She will also be groomed.
