Celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin is thankful for a friend who recovered the gravestone of her beloved dog, Chewy, from her home before the house burned down in the deadly Los Angeles wildfires.
On Friday, Jan. 10, the Ouai founder, 44, revealed in an Instagram Stories post that her friend Amy, an interior designer, went to her house before the Palisades Fire destroyed it and retrieved the gravestone belonging to Atkin’s late pup, who died in 2021.
“Amy, I hope you see this,” Atkin wrote on Instagram, alongside photos of the gravestone — etched with Chewy’s name and a drawing of the dog. “Thank you, thank you for getting to the house and getting my Chew Chew’s little gravestone. This means the world to me. Look for the people doing good in this devastation.”
“I had the worst mom guilt like I was leaving a baby behind,” she continued, referring to her late dog. “My heart feels whole again having our Chewy with us.”
Atkin previously shared that Chewy died in a coyote attack and has spoken candidly about how much Chewy and her other dog, Roo, mean to her.
“She was the light and laughter of our household. Our Princess,” Atkin wrote on Instagram back in 2021. “She got us thru the pandemic, she never left Rivers side, she taught Roo how to play and love.”
Before sharing the good news about Chewy’s gravestone, Atkin posted photos of the aftermath of the Palisades Fire, which had burned over 19,978 acres and was 6% contained as of Thursday, Jan. 9.
In one snap shared in a Jan. 10 Instagram Stories post, she shows that the wildfire tore through her home and left just a few beams behind.
“I will take any advice you have on how to explain to the kids that we won’t be going home,” she wrote in the Stories post, referring to her kids, whom she shares with her husband, Mike Rosenthal. “My babies beds and blankets and stuffed animals are here.”
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, Atkin began sharing emotional updates about the L.A. fires, including a photo of herself in tears while evacuating the area.
“This is weird to post, but our house is gone,” the hairstylist wrote in the post. “We just got confirmation. Our whole area demolished. So many are displaced and feeling scared right now it’s almost too much to comprehend.”
The stylist and her husband also shared before and after photos of their home.
“The last 48 hours have been such an intense rollercoaster, alternating between robotic and crushing emotions,” Rosenthal, a director, wrote on his own Instagram Stories, noting that the family was staying in a hotel for the time being. “Our house is gone. Everything in our house is gone beyond what we packed in the car. I know they are just things, and in many cases replaceable, but those things turned the house into a home.”
In her initial post, Atkin added that her neighbors are “taking care of one another and checking in, and that’s the theme for 2025.”
