A video of a dog mirroring her owner’s behavior has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip was posted by Melyssa Renteria (@whatsit2yuhh) and has garnered over 950,000 views since it was posted last month on December 31. A note overlaid on the clip reads: “When your dog is just as nosy as your husband.”
The footage shows a man peeking through a slit in a window blind. A dog, who is a Great Pyrenees, according to a hashtag shared with the post, sits beside him. She is also shown peeking through the window, as the man holds one of the blind panels up at the pup’s eye level. A caption shared with the post simply says, “taught her well.”
Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.
The dog’s posture in the viral clip is unsurprising because research has shown that canines are capable of imitating human actions.
A study published in July 2010 in Proceedings of the Royal Society found that, “like humans, dogs are subject to ‘automatic imitation.'”
The results of the study showed that “the imitative behavior of dogs is shaped more by their developmental interactions with humans than by their evolutionary history of domestication.”
Another study published in Animal Cognition in September 2006 found that a canine, after being trained to repeat nine human-demonstrated actions on command, was “able to use different human actions as samples against which to match his own behavior.”
The study added that “dogs might acquire abilities by observation that enhance their success in complex socio-behavioral situations.”
