Family’s Christmas wish answered when their missing dog rings the doorbell and returns home

JACKSONVILLE (WFOX/WJAX) – One family in Florida got their Christmas wish granted when it rang their doorbell.

Brooke Comer said the family dog Athena had been missing for more than a week safely returned home on her own and announced her presence.

After disappearing for nine days and causing her family to worry, Athena found her way home on Christmas Eve.

“It was about 2:30 a.m. She came pawing at the door, ringing the doorbell,” Comer said.

She said the 4-year-old German shepherd had appeared on numerous doorbell cameras after she got loose on Dec. 15.

The family said their community stepped up to help search for her and went through hours of doorbell video camera footage.

“People all the way from Jacksonville and Saint Augustine were inboxing me,” she said.

The Comer family did not know where Athena was for more than a week.

“Every day I came home from searching night and day. Every spot, I was out there, and they just came (home) heartbroken … there was a couple of meltdowns,” Comer said.

Comer said she tried not to wake up her children when Athena appeared at the door in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

“I was excited but I tried not to wake up the kids, but the kids woke up anyways from the excitement,” she said.

The family said the experience has changed their dog. They said she is part husky but has never had a husky howl until now.

“She has not stopped whining or howling since she’s got home, so she’s definitely found her voice,” Comer said.

Comer said Athena had never been microchipped or spayed but that the family plans to take care of that as soon as the holidays are over.
