KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – KC Pet Project says an abandoned dog left in a crate outside in Kansas City over the weekend is doing well after being rescued.
“She’s doing great,” said Angelina Bryant, Animal Services Field Supervisor with KC Pet Project. “Didn’t have any injuries, frostbite. She’s been hanging out in my office all day, super friendly. Taking naps, living her best life and she won’t have to deal with that again.”
Bryant answered the urgent call around 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning; an elderly man living around the 2000 block of Jackson Avenue said he was woken up by a dog barking. He looked out his window and saw the dog in the crate in distress. The man couldn’t make it down his driveway to get the dog himself, so Bryant jumped into action.
“Got to our shelter in the blizzard and the gates were frozen shut,” said Bryant. “I couldn’t get to our animal control trucks, so I took my personal vehicle.”
When she got to the area and found the dog, she was in disbelief.
“When I pulled up, the dog, sure enough, was on the sidewalk starting to get covered in snow,” said Bryant. “It was pacing, it was cold, shivering. How can someone do this? I don’t understand. You don’t know the circumstances, you don’t know what’s going through someone’s mind, but I don’t understand how someone could leave a dog in that type of condition.”
Despite being left outside in the cold, the dog greeted Bryant with a wagging tail when she approached.
“The dog was excited to see me,” said Bryant. “I think she knew I was there to help her.”
On Wednesday, the dog, who hasn’t been named yet, was all settled in at KC Pet Project, either curled up in her bed or walking around the office with her squeaky toy. They say it’s hard to guess her age, but know she is at least a year old.
“We’ve had a lot of calls since the weather got bad,” said Bryant. “A lot of welfare checks, animals being left out in the snow. If your dog has to be outside, it should have accessible, adequate shelter with straw inside. Some way to let them get out of the elements and keep warm. We have been really busy.”
The dog is being sponsored to go to a rescue and is now waiting to find her forever home. This incident is being investigated by KC Pet Project with help from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. If you have any information, you’re asked to contact the KC Pet Project.
KC Pet Project says if you need to report any animal-related concerns or emergencies, call 311 (or 816-513-1313) between the hours of 7 a.m. -7 p.m. Monday-Friday. For after-hours and weekend emergencies, please call 816-683-1373.
