Pudding, a dog left behind after losing all her family members to the Jeju Air plane crash, was rescued by a Korean animal rights organization, CARE.
Pudding lived in a rural village in Yeonggwang County, South Jeolla Province, with Mr. Bae, the oldest passenger to board the flight.
On Christmas evening, Bae’s family of nine—his wife, his eldest daughter, his younger daughter, and his grandchildren—departed on a five-day trip to Thailand to celebrate his 80th birthday. Bae’s younger son-in-law, who lived in Gyeonggi Province, had originally planned to join the family but was unable to due to work commitments.
When her family did not return on December 29, Pudding was found wandering in front of the house.

Bae’s neighbors told news outlets that, at the sound of any car or motorcycle, Pudding would quickly approach with her ears perked, only to sit back down in apparent disappointment. Pudding even ventured to the entrance of the village hall, where Bae frequented.
Bae’s six-year-old granddaughter was Pudding’s best friend—and the neighbors’ hearts shattered as they watched Pudding sniff around the village for the trace of the Bae family.
The dog was outside looking around all day, so I told her to come to my house. But she only followed me as far as the front yard before turning back to her own home. Who will take care of that dog now?

On December 31, 2024 (KST), not too long after Pudding’s news circulated online, CARE shared via its official Instagram that Pudding had been taken in with consent from the younger son-in-law.
In the latest update on January 3, 2025 (KST), CARE updated that Pudding was in good health at her Seoul foster home and thanked the supporters for their interest in helping out the dog.
CARE went to find Pudding who was left behind. We met her sitting at the steps in front of the village hall, waiting endlessly as she watched cars pass by. Seeing Pudding look so dejected, we could feel her sadness.
Not to startle Pudding, we were gentle with picking her up. We managed to get in touch with the bereaved at the funeral. CARE was given consent to temporarily take Pudding in.
Fortunately, Pudding is in good health after a check-up. One of CARE staff members is fostering Pudding right now, and she is adjusting to her life in Seoul.
Yesterday, the bereaved asked CARE to help find Pudding a new home. CARE will now be looking for a new adoptive family. A form for adoption applications will soon be shared.
Many people have expressed their desire to adopt Pudding while mourning the family lost in the tragedy. CARE will ensure that Pudding finds a loving home that will care for her as much as the Bae family did.
Our deepest condolences to the victims of the plane tragedy, including Pudding’s family.
