Even though there’s no doubt that dogs love their family unconditionally, there can also be moments when that love isn’t equally distributed. Some dogs naturally bond more with one person due to the way they were bred (working dogs, for example), but others just happen to become closer to one person over others. It’s nothing personal!
No matter how much we adore our dogs, it can feel frustrating and sad not to be the person a pup has bonded with. Luckily, a little bit of humor can help ‘spare humans’ cope.
Arya, the Australian Cattle Dog, loves both of her parents, but her mom couldn’t help but poke fun when she suddenly became the spare human. She shared a hilarious December 22 video proving just how crazy the pup is about her dad, but the ‘greeting’ she gave Mom has people laughing out loud.
OMG—the attitude! Arya bounded down the stairs and toward Mom as if they were about to share a sweet moment, but at the last second, she turned around to wait for Dad. That must have been heartbreaking! Luckily, this dog’s mom has a sense of humor and isn’t taking the moment too personally.

Commenters, on the other hand, are having a field day with the Australian Cattle Dog‘s icy greeting for her mom. In some ways, no greeting at all would have been better!
“She even looked back like, ‘Oh, you’re here too,'” noticed MadMoose. Clearly, she did not care! This is a perfect example of what it’s like to be the spare human to a dog. As sweet as it is to watch a happy dog light up in anticipation of seeing their favorite person, there’s always a part that wishes it was you instead.
How to Bond With Your Dog
Gravitating toward one family member can be an instinctual response in some dogs, but anyone can strengthen their bond with their pup regardless of their status in the dog’s social hierarchy. Spending one-on-one time is the best way to start building this bond, though it’s just as important to create positive experiences and associations during your time together. Whether it’s a trip to Starbucks for a Pup Cup or a hike at your favorite sunny spot, your goal is to get their tail wagging!
Another way to bond with your dog is by practicing obedience training. Not only do you get to spend time together, but you also establish a sense of trust and communication when you practice ‘sit’ and ‘stay.’
Arya may have been excited to see her dad in this adorable video, but she no doubt has moments like this with Mom, too. After all, dogs are made of unconditional love!
