A cat’s awareness to not startle his senior doggy sibling immediately captured the internet’s heart.
Cal and Daisy, Colby Roberts’ pets, are best friends. She told Newsweek that the two used to play wrestle and cuddle when they were younger. But as Daisy aged, her energy decreased, as did her hearing and vision.
In this week’s TikTok video posted to the account @colbyroberts143, Roberts explained that Daisy, her 15-year-old dog, has cataracts and is “essentially deaf.”
Canine cataracts occur when a cloudy film sets into the eye lens and prevents light from entering. WebMD reported that canine cataracts form when the eye’s proteins clump together and create a cloud-like substance in the lens. As more gather, the cloud eventually blocks the entire lens.
Cal, the cat, started picking up on Daisy’s limited seeing and hearing abilities. Instead of continuing to play how they normally do, Cal adjusted to meet Daisy’s needs.
“Daisy doesn’t like to do so much so Cal approaches gently because he knows Daisy is losing her eyesight and hearing,” Roberts said. “Over time Cal was noticing her aging and adapted to it.”
But beyond being careful while playing together, Cal realized he needed to approach Daisy cautiously. In the video, Cal slightly lifts the rug Daisy was sitting on with his paws as he “gently warns” her of his presence. He wanted her to feel him nearby.
Cal then slowly scooted himself right next to Daisy and slapped a big brotherly kiss on her head. But one kiss wasn’t enough to show his love for Daisy. He wrapped his front paw around Daisy’s back and continued licking her head.
This gentle gesture didn’t surprise Roberts. She said Cal and Daisy’s bond is unique.
‘How Considerate’
Viewers immediately fell in love with these two fur siblings, touched by how understanding animals are with each other. Within three days of being posted, the TikTok video amassed over 1.6 million views, 241,100 likes and 513 comments.
“This is one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen,” said one viewer, while another added: “How considerate of that sweet kitty.”
A third person pointed out: “Omg his little hug.”
“Kitty is like, ‘Hey buddy, I’m coming to give you a bath,'” wrote a user.
