It was pouring rain when a solitary dog wandered onto a busy highway in Kingsport, Tennessee.
The dog could have easily been hurt, especially due to the road’s conditions. Wind and water lashed the cars’ windshields, making it difficult for drivers to see much of anything.
But the keen eye and quick thinking of one person helped save the dog’s life.

A police officer named Lance Willis said he immediately noticed “some kind of animal” on the road. When he inched closer, he realized it was a brown German shepherd dog.
“There were cars in both lanes that were stopped, so I put on my blue lights because people usually stop when they see blue lights,” Trooper Willis said in a video interview published on the Facebook page for the Tennessee Highway Patrol. “I called into the radio so they knew where I was.”
Once parked, Willis leaped out of his car and into the rain. “I tried to usher the dog towards me,” he said.
A video shows the dog — a much-loved pet named Luna — casually padding across the highway towards the police car. Willis opens his car door for her. She hops right in and he shuts the door behind her.
“We like to focus on traffic safety… and sometimes, we even rescue dogs out of the roadway,” Willis said.
Petworks Animal Services, a nonprofit animal shelter that works with the city of Kingsport, confirmed that the dog’s owner reclaimed Luna and took her home.
“Luna is home safe with her family,” a spokesperson for the Petworks Animal Service said in a statement sent to News Channel 11 in Tennessee.
“Trooper Willis said Friday that Luna’s owner locating her was all he hoped for.”
