SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Every week tough decisions are made at our local shelters.
Animal advocates from around our area have the impossible job of looking through a euthanasia list.
As we know, there are always more dogs than there are kennels. That’s where euthanizing for space comes in.
So this week on the ‘death row list’ six pups at surrounding shelters are facing euthanasia if we don’t step up. Animal advocates are asking for fosters or adopters for these pups, and you can contact 912-665-6046 to do so.
These dogs aren’t bad or unwanted dogs, there’s just not enough space for them- and that’s where you can come in.
“So in 2024, 65% of our city and county shelters euthanized for space. And that has been getting worse over the years,” said Renegade Paws Rescue’s Jen Taylor.
Most of the dogs are boys, but one of the dogs, the gray one, is a girl.
You can reach out to Renegade Paws Rescue here to foster or adopt.
“So in 2023, Georgia itself was number five for the killing of companion animals. We don’t have 2024’s numbers, but I don’t, I don’t imagine that they’re going to be better,” said Renegade Paws Rescue, Jen Taylor. “If people spay and neuter and we don’t have more puppies, there’s less dogs to go to the shelter, which then, you know, makes sense that there are less dogs that would have to be euthanized. So that’s why spaying and neutering is so important. And there are so many free resources out there to spay and neuter. We have a resource for that. We can do it for free for you.”
If you are able to even foster temporarily, reach out to Renegade directly, here.
“We talk about that every week and try to figure out what dogs can come to our rescue so that they have more space to not have to be euthanized. Unfortunately, not all dogs can come to the rescue. It’s not a magical place. We don’t have endless kennels and endless resources and endless fosters. So the decisions have to be made, and we also have to make those decisions because if we say no, we know what that means. And the only way sometimes that we can save them is with a foster parent.”
Renegade says it also doesn’t have to be one of these dogs specifically, it can be one of the other dogs on their website, so it will still open up a spot for these dogs.
If you are able to even foster temporarily, reach out to Renegade directly.
She continues, “You don’t essentially have to foster one of these particular dogs. You can foster a dog here at our shelter because a space is a space. You can see a dog at the shelter online or on Facebook and say, hey, I want to foster that. Call your local rescue. We’re all happy to help you if you’re going to foster.” said Taylor.
