One morning last month, Juliette Motta woke up at around 3 a.m. to see off her boyfriend, who had to work early that day. She’d planned to go back to sleep when he left. However, sleep wouldn’t come easily.
After crawling back into bed and beginning to drift off, Motta felt something rustling beneath the covers next to her.
“I woke up thinking my dog was scratching herself,” Motta wrote.
Someone was indeed in bed with Motta — but it wasn’t her dog.
Flipping on the light, this is what she saw:
Motta’s second thought was that a large insect had flown into her fourth-story apartment through a window her boyfriend had insisted on keeping open.
“I started recording because I was going to send that video to my boyfriend, saying, ‘Look, because we left the window open, a bug got in,’” Motta told The Dodo. “Then when a bat came out, I was like, ‘What the f—?’ I hadn’t planned for that.”
Motta was startled, not wanting to touch the lively little bat, so she called a friend for help. By then, the bat had made his way into her closet.
Motta’s friend was able to safely collect the bat and carry him back outside.
“The bat was fine,” Motta said. “I have a video of the little bat happily climbing in the tree [we put him in]. He looked good.”
Fortunately, the bat appeared to be healthy, showing no signs of abnormal behavior, but Motta was nevertheless wise to avoid touching him directly. Bats can carry diseases, so experts suggest never touching them with bare hands.
Motta didn’t need to be told that twice.
“The truth is, it scared me a lot,” she said. “I didn’t want to.”
