CRAIGSVILLE, Va. (WHSV) – An Augusta County family seeks justice after they found their puppy injured after escaping their home. The community has also come together to raise money for the 8-month-old dog named Little Girl to make sure she gets the surgery she needs.
The Augusta County family was left shocked Thursday after Little Girl escaped their yard for only a few minutes before the family heard what they think was a gunshot, and then found the dog’s leg injured.
After this, the family was left in a hard spot with no funds for an emergency veterinarian, so they worked quickly to clean the wound themselves and later called Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge, which helped the family go to the vet. The organization then started a fundraiser to raise money to save the dog’s leg. President Kimberly Hawk said she was amazed by the outpour of support.
”We explained that in our fundraiser, our goal was $3,500 — we hit that within an hour, and people just kept giving and giving. It was really amazing. So on the fundraiser, I believe it’s close to $8,000 now, people were just so incredibly generous. I think people love dogs, nobody wants to see them suffer,” Hawk said. “We’re always astounded by the support we get in the community — not just donations, but volunteers, fosters, adopters and people that go out in the community and help us in areas where they may need help getting dogs off chains, getting them spayed and neutered, some basic vet care [and] things like that.”
Hawk said she now hopes to use the money toward Little Girl’s surgery and put aside extra funds toward another dog who needs help.
“The fact that we were able to double what we asked for means that we can help more animals too,” Hawk said. “There’s another dog in Augusta County that has a tumor on her belly, and she does need surgery, but she was on a waiting list and now we can help her.”
As for the incident that involved Little Girl’s injury, Lt. Leslie Snyder with the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office said this is an ongoing investigation.
