WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Residents of one Wichita neighborhood haven’t’ received mail at home in nearly a month after the post office reported that one of their mail carriers was attacked by a dog in the neighborhood.
The impacted residents are supposed to be getting a neighborhood collection mailbox, something the postal service says is irreversible once installed. Now, the neighbors are working to change that decision, hoping for an eventual return to getting their mail at home.
Resident of the neighborhood in College Hill received a letter, letting them know that mail services would stop the next day following the postal service’s report that a carriers were attacked by a dog on three separate occasions.
“[The letter] said that tomorrow, starting the next day after this letter came out, that we would have to go to the post office to get our mail and that there would be communal boxes put on the end of the block, and that it was irreversible,” one neighbor summarized.
After receiving the letter, neighbors started talking and found out that only residents on one street received a warning before the final letter.
“We found out that there were three incidents that they cited in a letter to Pershing (Street),” said Patricia Hileman with the College Hill Advisory Board. “Pershing got a warning, and we would really love if if South Terrace could get a warning before they would get a withholding of mail.”
Neighbors are asking for mail services to be reinstated and a proper warning issued for those in the neighborhood who didn’t receive it.
“These neighbors really got sideswiped with the information of all of the sudden losing their mail service,” Hileman said. “We respectfully ask for the USPS to reverse their decision and apply that warning to South Terrace, just like they did to Pershing, to be fair,” Hileman said.
In the meantime, neighbors said the issue surrounding the reported dog attacks has been addressed and they’re waiting to hear back from the post office.
12 News reached out to the Wichita City Council about the issue. The elected city leaders said it’s something impacting neighborhoods across the city and they’ve been working to address this with the post office.
Among the questions we’re asking is why the process of putting a collection mailbox in place is irreversible and once added to a neighborhood, the postal service won’t return to delivering to homes, even after the issue that necessitated the communal boxes has been resolved.
Another question we’re asking is whether any of the dog attack incidents were reported to animal control. Finally, we want to know if a curbside mail delivery option is possible so that mail carriers don’t have to leave their vehicles to deliver the mail to homes. 12 News reached out to the post office multiple times for comment, but as of late Friday night, hadn’t received a response.
